Venados Double Up Tomateros 6-3

LEAGUE LEADING MAZATLAN IMPROVES TO 10-6 ON THE YEAR

Sherman Johnson got things going for Mazatlan in the bottom of the 1st with a single and went to second on a wild pitch, With one out, Brian Hernandez singled to right to score Johnson for the 1-0 lead.

Singles by Luis Cruz and Issmael Salas in the top of the 4th put runners on the corners with 1 out for Culiacan. A ground out scored Cruz and a double by Ronnier Musteleir scored Salas as the Tomateros took a 2-1 lead.

Alex Liddi doubled to lead off the bottom of the 5th for the Venados. Samar Leyva singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Following a strikeout, Kenny Wilson drew a 4 pitch base on balls to load the bases. With 2 outs, Edson Garcia singled to right to score Liddi and Leyva to give Mazatlan a 3-2 lead. The Venados would add a run in the 6th to increase their lead to 4-2.

A single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt had runners on second and third for the Tomateros in the top of the 7th. Pinch hitter Henry Ramos ground out 4-3  to score Antonio Lamas, as Culiacan cut the lead to 4-3.

With one out in the bottom of the 7th, Hernandez doubled to score Johnson for the 5-3 lead and Jesus Fabela singled to score Hernandez for the final 6-3 win for Mazatlan.

Walter Silva (1-0) picked up the win in relief and Evan Marshall earned his 5th save of the season. Daniel Rodriguez (0-2) worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits in taking the loss for the 7-9 Tomateros.

Mazatlan Wins Over Culiacan 3-2

This game was scoreless until the bottom of the 6th. Manny Barreda went 6 innings for the Tomateros giving up a run on 4 hits while Eduardo Vera went 5 for the Venados holding the Tomateros scoreless on 1 hit. Neither starter figured in the final decision.

Brian Hernandez singled with the bases loaded to drive in Sebastian Valle for the 1-0 lead but the Venados could not take advantage of the bases loaded situation.

Culiacan tied the score in the top of the 7th on a single by Antonio Lamas that scored Dylan Moore.

Mazatlan took the lead again in the bottom of the 8th when Edson Garcia singled to left to drive in Kenny Wilson for the 2-1 lead.

Playing catch up all night, the Tomateros tied the game once again in the top of the 9th as a single off the bat of Jose Orozco drove in Moore setting up the 9th inning heroics for Liddi.

Anthony Giansanti singled to lead off the inning for Mazatlan. Giansanti went to third on an errant pick off attempt by the Culiacan pitcher. Alex Liddi took a 1-0 fastball the opposite way for a single as Giansanti trotted home with the winning run.

Evan Marshall (1-0) was charged with a blown save that turned into a win for the league leading 9-6 Venados. David Goforth (1-1) possibly cost himself the game with the wild throw to first on the pick off attempt.

Hurricane Willa to Affect Mazatlan/Navojoa Series

PLUS - LMP 1st WEEK STANDINGS AND STATISTICS

The passing of Hurricane Willa, expected to make landfall at or near Mazatlan late Tuesday, has caused the LMP to cancel at least the 1st game of the 3 game series between the Mayos de Navojoa and the Venados de Mazatlan.

The league has stated they will be working closely with the Civil Protection Service to determine the status of the series.

On to the 1st week standings and statistics for the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico.

Mazatlan, Culiacan and los Charros de Jalisco all share 1st place with identical 5-3 records. The Mayos and Aguilas are next at 4-3. (these 2 teams had a 13 inning game ended at midnight with that game not included in the win/loss record) The Yaquis de Obregon and Los Mochis are 3-5 with the Naranjeros in the basement at 2-6.

Alonzo Harris (NAV) leads the league in hitting with a .472 average followed by Brian Hernandez (MAZ ,467), Josuan Hernandez (MOC .435), Asael Sanchez (MAZ .429) and Anthony Giansanti (MAZ .423).

5 players are tied for the league lead in Home Runs with 2 each. 3 of the top home run hitters are from the Charros de Jalisco.

Alonzo Harris (NAV) has scored 11 runs with Niko Vasquez (JAL) second in the league with 10.

Alonzo Harris (NAV) along with Juan Perez (MXC) lead the league in steals with 5.

Although it's way early to talk pitching stats, Jesus Anguamea (OBR) leads the league with 2 victories. Javier Solano (MXC) has 15 Ks while Jose Hernandez (MAZ) and Vinny Nittoli (MXC) have 12 each.

Evan Marshall (MAZ) and Grant Sides (JAL) lead the league in saves with 3.

Manny Rodriguez, of the Charros de Jalisco was named as the Player of the Week in the LMP. Rodriguez hit .391 with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and had a 1.162 OPS as the Charros won 5 of 6 games.

Mazatlan 5, Hermosillo 4

EARLY SEASON WOES CONTINUE AS HERMOSILLO DROPS TO 1-6

The Venados improved to 5-2 on the young season and the Naranjeros fell to 1-6 with the 5-4 loss. The LMP season is divided into to parts with approximately 32 games per half. losing 6 games this early in the season gives the Naranjeros a tough row to hoe for the first half season of play.

Mazatlan scored 3 runs in the 5th, two on a home run by Quincy Latimore to take a 4-0 lead after five. Latimore was 3 for 4 on the night with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Hermosillo got back 3 runs in their half of the 6th inning. Roberto Ramos started the inning by drawing a walk. Sergio Burruel singled with Ramos stopping at second. A double by Eric Young Jr. scored Ramos and put runners at second and third with no outs. After a pitching change and a fly ball out, Danny Espinosa singled to drive in Burruel and Young to get the Naranjeros to within a run at 4-3.

Hermosillo tied the game at 4 in the 7th when Jasson Atondo scored from third as Young was caught in a rundown between first and second following a pick off attempt.

Mazatlan scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the 8th on a single by Latimore, a sacrifice bunt by Edson Garcia and a single by Assael Sanchez that scored Latimore.

Roman Pena (1-0) picked up the win in relief with Evan Marshall earning his 3rd save of the young season. Jorge Castillo (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Venados Score Late Top Charros 5-4

CHARROS OUT HIT BY MAZATLAN 13-5

Elian Leyva pitched well for the home Charros over 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits. The pitch he would like to have back though, was a 3 ball 2 strike fastball he threw to Anthony Giansanti. Giansanti hit that pitch deep to right for a 2 run home run that got Mazatlan on the board first with a 2-0 lead.

Jalisco responded with 4 runs in their half of the 2nd. Daric Barton both reached base safely on fielding errors by the Venados and Gabriel Gutierrez drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Darian Sandford singles to score a run. After a pop up for the second out, Manny Rodriguez waited out a walk to force in Vasquez with the second run. Japhet Amador lined a ground rule double to left to plate Gutierrez and Sandford as Jalisco took a 4-0 lead.

Mazatlan tied the game at 4 in the top of the 6th inning on singles by Edson Garcia, Brian Hernandez, Asael Sanchez (that scored Garcia) and Anthony Giansanti that plated Hernandez.

The Venados scored what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the 8th inning. Quincy Latimore singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice but by Asael Sanchez. Latimore scored when while attempting to steal third, the Charros third baseman misplayed the throw from Gutierrez. That gave Mazatlan the 5-4 lead and the eventual win.

Adrian Ramirez (1-0) picked up the win for Mazatlan and Evan Marshall pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn the save. Joe Colon (0-1) suffered the loss giving up the run in the 8th.

These two teams play again on Sunday the 14th of October although switching sites to Mazatlan for game 2 of their Liga Mexicana del Pacifico opening series.
