Joe Namath famously predicted his heavily underdog NY Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III and his prognostication became reality when the Jets won 16-7.
Jarrod Dyson has predicted that his Kansas City Royals would not be returning to Baltimore for a game 6 in the ALCS.
When asked by Kansas City Star reporter Andy McCullough if Dyson expects the game to return to Baltimore for a 6th game, Dyson said, "No sir, I don't and I don't think the Orioles think that way either".
Don't believe this could happen in today's baseball world? Read the ESPN article here.
How is this the same? He was asked if he thought they would go back to Baltimore, and he said he didn't. This is not 'trash talk', he wasn't derogatory or berating, and he didn't insult anyone. Did you really expect him to say, "Yes, I think th O's will win the next 2 out if 3 games". I'm watching MLB NETWORK RIGHT NOW and just heard two announcers predict a sweep. The media, including you, sir, need to relax a bit
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment K.b., The comparison is that the Jets were a heavy underdog going into Super Bowl III. At the start of the season the Royals were 33-1 underdogs. At the All Star break they were 40-1 underdogs. On September 29th of September the Royals were the least likely to win the World Series at 16-1 (the least likely to win). All I am saying is that Jarrod could have said, "Those guys are good, If we play the way we have we will win." Why give a team facing elimination further sound bites. I predicted that the Royals would beat the A's. No ESPN expert did. I thought they had a slim chance against the Angels. No expert did. I'm not predicting a sweep but the last 11 times in a 7 game series where a team went 2-0 as a visitor, that team has advanced. Will they beat Baltimore? I don't know...that's why we play the game!
