Charros Power Past Naranjeros 6-4

The Charros scored 6 runs on 11 hits, including home runs by Manny Rodriguez and Japhet Amador, to beat the Naranjeros de Hermosillo 6-4 on Tuesday night in front of 9,527 hometown fans.

Bruce Kern (2-2) was the winning pitcher, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4 in 5 1/3 innings of work. While pitching effectively, Kern had a down side to his effort. He allowed 3 walks on the night and 2 of those free passes turned into runs for Hermosillo. Aaron Kurcz came in with 2 outs in the 8th inning, got the last out and pitched the 9th to notch his 6th save of the year.

Tim Melville (0-2) gave up 5 runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings on the mound. Melville did not receive good run support as the Naranjeros were 4 for 17 with runners in scoring position.

Hermosillo opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd. Eric Young Jr. and Efren Navarro both walked. Jose Amador singled to score Young. With 1 out, Roberto Ramos singled to drive in Navarro to give the Naranjeros the early 2-0 lead. Cacao Valdez singled to lead off the bottom of the 3rd for the Charros and went to third on a double by Art Charles. Jonathan Aceves ground out to first as Valdez scored. Carlos Figueroa walked and Amadeo Zazueta followed with a single to drive in Charles. A single by Manny Rodriguez scored Figueroa and the Charros had taken the lead 3-2.

The Charros added 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th on a 2 out solo home run to left by Rodriguez followed by 3 consecutive singles that drove in a run to give the Charros a 5-2 lead.

The Naranjeros scored a run in the 7th inning to make it a 5-3 ball game but Japhet Amador hit a rocket of a line drive to right center for a home run and the 6-3 Charros lead.

Arturo Rodriguez drew yet another lead off walk in the top of the 8th and went to third on a single by Matt Skole. Rodriguez scored on a double play ball that made it 6-4.

Charros Defense
2 games remaining with the Naranjeros before traveling to Navojoa to take on the Mayos for 3 games beginning on the 4th of November. The Charros will return to Guadalajara to face the Aguilas de Mexicali on the 8th of November.

Obregon 8, Navojoa 3

Arturo Lopez (3-0) struck out 7, walked 4 and gave up 2 hits while shutting out the Mayos over 6 innings in the Yaquis 8-3 win over the Mayos. Zack Dodson (0-2) allowed 7 runs on 9 hits in 4 innings on the mound to take the loss. Joey Wendle was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and Olmo Rosario 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored while Leo Heras went 1 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored for Obregon. Cole Garner was 1 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs for Navojoa.

Mexicali 4, Los Mochis 3

CJ Retherford homered in the 8th and Adan Munoz hit a solo shot in the 9th as the Aguilas de Mexicali topped the Caneros 4-3. The Aguilas improved to 11-7 on the year while the Caneros fell to 10-8. Dave Sappelt went 3 for 4 and Yordanys Linares 2 for 5 for Mexicali. Isaac Rodriguez was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored. Leandro Castro was also 2 for 5 for Los Mochis. Fautino De Los Santos (1-0) was charged with a blown save yet got the win and Jake Sanchez earned his 6th save. Thomas Melgarejo (0-2) took the loss.

Culiacan 10, Mazatlán 3

The Venados fell to 5-13 on the year in the 10-3 loss to the Tomateros. Ronnier Mustelier, Marco Guzman and Joey Meneses all homered for Culiacan in the win. Corey Brown hit a home run for Mazatlán. Aaron Thompson (2-0) got the win for the Tomateros while Sasagi Sanchez (0-1) took the loss for the Venados. Mustelier was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored and Oscar Robles 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Culiacan while Corey Brown went 4 for 4 with the home run and 2 RBIs and Brian Hernandez 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored for Mazatlán.

Jalisco Pitching Stops Venados Offense in 3-1 Win

Aaron Kurcz Earned His 5th Save
Tyler Alexander (1-0) worked 5 1/3 innings for the Charros allowing a home run and 1 other hit in the 3-1 Jalisco win. Aaron Kurcz earned his 5th save of the year as the Venados offense was stymied all night by the Charros pitching.

Nick Strunk (0-1) took the loss striking out 4 and giving up a run in 4 innings. Mazatlán reliever Ernesto Zaragoza gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in relief of Strunk.

With 2 outs in the top of the 4th for Jalisco, Carlos Figueroa singled on a ground ball to the pitcher and went to second as Strunk's throw went wide of the bag for an error. Figueroa scored on a single to center by Amadeo Zazueta for the 1-0 early Charros lead.

Jalisco added 3 runs in the 5th inning. Agustin Murilllo drew a lead off walk and went to second on a single by Michael Choice. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cacao Valdez. The Venados pitcher issued an intentional walk to Art Charles to load the bases. Alan Espinoza singled to left to score Murillo. (watch Espinoza's single here) Figueroa hit a ground ball force out that plated Choice and Zazueta singled to left to drive in Charles with the third run and a 4-0 Jalisco lead.

Tyler Alexander, the Charros starter, gave up a 1 out solo home run to Esteban Quiroz in the bottom of the 6th that cut the lead to 4-1 but the Venados would not score again and Kurcz worked a 1-2-3 9th inning to preserve the win for Alexander.

Zazueta was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs, Figueroa 1 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored and Alan Espinoza 1 for 4 with an RBI for Jalisco.

Esteban went 1 for 4 with the home run and Cyle Hankerd 1 for 4 with the second hit by Mazatlán.

The series concludes with the rubber match on Sunday. Monday is a travel day before the Naranjeros de Hermosillo arrive in Guadalajara for a 3 game set beginning on Tuesday the 1st of November. Come out and support the team. Todos Somos Charros!!

Edgar Osuna (1-0) gave up 2 runs on 5 hits to get the win and Jake Sanchez recorded his 5th save in the 4-3 win for the Aguilas over the Yaquis. Rolando Valdez (0-3) took the loss. Ramon Rios was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Adan Munoz 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Mexicali. Leo Heras was 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored while Nelson Perez went 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBIs for the Yaquis.

Navojoa 5, Culiacan 4

Alan Sanchez homered and scored twice for the Mayos in their 5-4 win over the Tomateros. Randy Arozarena and Jesus Castillo were both 2 for 3 with an RBI for Navojoa. Jose Orozco was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs for Culiacan in the loss. Hector Velazquez (3-0) went 7 innings, striking out 9 and giving up 3 runs on 5 hits for the win. Esteban Haro picked up his 2nd save. Gerardo Sanchez (0-1) took the loss.

Hermosillo 4, Los Mochis 3 (14 innings)

The Naranjeros loaded the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 14th inning on a triple by Eric Young Jr. and intentional walks to Jose Amador and Matt Skole. With David Washington at the plate, Jesus Verduzco in corked a wild pitch that brought in Young for the 4-3 win. Verduzco (0-1) was charged with the loss while Raul Barron (1-1) picked up the win. Jorge Flores was 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored for Hermosillo. Isaac Rodriguez went 2 for 6 with an RBI for the Caneros.

Charros Crush Tomateros 10-1

AMADOR AND VALENZUELA HOMER IN THE WIN

On a perfect day for baseball in Guadalajara, the Charros were almost perfect in defeating the Tomateros de Culiacan 10-1 behind a strong outing by starter Marco Tovar (2-0). Tovar worked 6 innings, giving up the lone run on 6 hits while striking out 2.

The Charros had built a 2-0 lead when Nick Buss singled to start the top of the 4th for Culiacan. Sergio Gastelum followed with a double to left center with Buss stopping at third. Ryan Lollis hit a ground ball to second that scored Buss as the Tomateros cut the Charros lead to 2-1.

Jalisco responded quickly and resoundingly in their half of the 4th inning. Edson Garcia drew a lead off walk and went to third on a single by Gabriel Gutierrez. Jesus Lopez dropped a squeeze bunt down the first base line that catcher Ali Solis couldn't handle, Garcia scored and all runners were safe. Eduardo Arredondo laid down a bunt for a single and the bases were loaded. With one out, Jesus Valdez hit a long fly ball to left center that scored Gutierrez for the 4-1 lead. With one swing of the bat, Japhet Amador made it a 7-1 game with a long 3 run home run to left.

Pinch hitter, Fernando Valenzuela Jr. hit a solo home run to right to increase the Charros lead to 8-1.

Eduardo Arredondo singled in the bottom of the 8th and went to second on a throwing error by the Tomatero shortstop. Manny Rodriguez than lofted a fly ball into right center that fell between the two Tomatero outfielders for a single. Alejandro Ortiz singled to drive in Arredondo. Following a walk to Japhet Amador that loaded the bases, Alex Liddi hit a sac fly to right that scored Ortiz for the 10-1 lead and the win.

Felipe Arredondo (0-1) gave up 7 runs on 9 hits to take the loss for the Tomateros who fell to 1-6 on the year while the Charros improved to 6-1.

Mexicali 5, Los Mochis 3

The Aguilas scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to overcome a 3-2 deficit and beat the Caneros 5-3. Andres Avila (0-1) was charged with a blown save and the loss. Francisco Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win in relief and Adam Reifer notched his 3rd save of the year. Chris Roberson was 3 for 4 and Gil Velazquez went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Mexicali. Yunesky Betancourt homered for the Aquilas. Saul Soto homered for the Caneros and Roldolfo Amador was 2 for 4 in a losing effort.

Hermoillo 7, Mazatlán 3 (13 innings)

The Naranjeros snapped a 6 game losing streak with a wild 13 inning win in Mazatlán. Hermosillo scored 4 runs in the top of the 13th to defeat the Venados 7-3. Mazatlan had tied the game in the bottom of the 9th. The Naranjeros used 8 pitchers in the win while the Venados called on 7 pitchers. Ronnie Shaban was charged with a blown save for Hermosillo while Nickolas Sarianides (1-0) picked up the win. Jesus Sanchez (1-1) took the loss. Adan Munoz had a home run and 2 RBIs, Jose Amador went 3 for 4 with an RBI with Sebastion Elizalde and Carlos Gastelum both driving in runs for the Naranjeros. Heber Gomez was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Venados.

Ciudad de Obregon 5, Navojoa 0

Christian Villanueva hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning, his 4th of the year, to lead the Yaquis to a 5-0 whitewash of the Mayos. Victor Arano (2-0) picked up the win in relief while the Navojoa starter, Daniel Gutierrez (0-1), took the loss. Villanueva, Asael Sanchez, Iker Franco and Luis Urias were all 2 for 4 for the Yaquis. Jesus Castillo went 2 for 4 for the Mayos.
