Culiacan Weathers a 2 Run 9th Tops Mexicali 3-2

TOMATEROS PITCHERS HAD 2 HIT SHUTOUT THROUGH 8 INNINGS

Culiacan scratched out 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning to take a 3-0 lead that would prove to be enough to defeat the Aguilas 3-2.

Ryan McBroom
Roemon Fields led off the inning by drawing a walk. Rico Noel was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Henry Ramos moved the runners to second and third. Ryan McBroom walked to load the bases with 1 out. A Dylan Moore single to left scored Fields and Noel for the 3-0 lead.

The Aguilas made a game of it in the bottom of the 9th. Juan Perez drew a lead off walk and promptly stole second. A ground out moved Perez to third. David Harris doubled to score Perez and CJ Retherford followed with a single to plate Harris for the second run of the inning. Retherford was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double. This proved critical because Ricky Alvarez then singled and Xorge Carrillo walked to put runners at first and second with 2 outs instead of bases loaded with 1 out. Pinch hitter, Chuck Taylor struck out to end the game with the Tomateros the 3-2 winners.

James Russell (1-1) picked up the win and Sasagi Sanchez earned the save despite the drama that was the bottom of the 9th. Sergio Mitre (1-1) took the loss for the Aguilas.

Mexicali Jumps Out to 8-0 Lead and Beat Hermosillo 8-3

RICARDO SERRANO 2 FOR 4 WITH HOME RUN AND 4 RBIs

Although the Naranjeros out hit the Aguilas 11 to 10, they committed 4 errors and were just 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position. That is a .125 average in those situations and teams will not win games without clutch hitting. Mexicali, on the other hand, scored 4 times in the 2nd and added 4 more runs in the 4th to coast to the 8-3 win.

Staring with the 3rd inning, the Naranjeros had at least 1 runner on base in every inning but, with the exception of a 3 run 5th inning, they couldn't get the timely hits needed to bring runners home.

Ricardo Serrano Home Run
The Aguilas though scored their runs in bunches. Mexicali scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning all with 2 outs. Singles by David Harris and Xorge Carrillo set the stage for a Ricardo Serrano home run to right for 3 runs and Juan Perez scored on a fielding error later in the inning.

Mexicali would add 4 runs in the 4th on a walk, 3 consecutive singles, a force out, a wild pitch and 2 more singles to take the 8-0 lead. The Aguilas got 5 of their 10 hits in the game in that 4th inning barrage.

Estadio Sonora in Hermosillo was packed with 16,000 fans, there to witness the home opener for the Naranjeros. They left disappointed with the loss.

Sergio Mitre (1-0) pitched 5 innings for Mexicali giving up the 3 runs on 6 hits in getting the win. Scott Copeland (0-1) allowed 6 runs on 5 hits over 3 innings of work to take the loss.

Puebla Staves Off Elimination In Game 4

STRONG STARTING AND RELIEF PITCHING IN 6-3 WIN

Watch the final out of the game here.

The Pericos de Puebla got a strong outing by starter Andres Mesa, despite a rough 1st inning, a hold by reliever Mario Morales and a two inning save from Deunte Heath to, temporarily at least, halt the Toros de Tijuana's quest for the Copa Zaachila.

Sergio Mitre lasted just 3 1/3 innings in the loss for the Toros. He allowed 5 earned runs on 7 hits in his time on the mound.

Tijuana jumped on top early with 3 runs in the top of the 1st. Jose Guadalupe Chavez and Roberto Lopez singled and Corey Browm walked to load the bases with no outs. Cyle Hankerd was hit by a pitch to force in Chavez. Jorge Cantu followed with a double to right to drive in Lopez and Brown but Hankerd was cut down at home on a great relay throw by the Perico's second baseman. The Toros were up 3-0 before the Pericos had a turn at bat.

Puebla struck back in the home half of the 2nd. Ricky Rodriguez doubled and Cesar Tapia walked. A attempted sacrifice bunt by Hector Garanzuay resulted in Rodriguez being thrown out at third but Sergio Perez singled to drive in Tapia and cut the lead to 3-1.

With 1 out in the bottom of the 4th, Tapia singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Garanzuay doubled to left to score Tapia. Sergio Perez singled softly to short keeping Garanzuay on second. Alberto Carreon hit a ground-rule double to right to score Garanzuay to knot the score at 3. After a ground out, Endy Chavez doubled to score Perez and Carreon and Puebla led 5-3.

Ricky Rodriguez singled with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning and, one out later stole second. Hector Garanzuay singled to plate Rodriguez with the 6th and final run for Puebla and the 6-3 win.

Game 5 will be played in the Estadio Hermanos Serdan on Sunday tie 10th of September.
