Mazatlan Sweeps Doubleheader From Navojoa

VENADOS 4-1 AND 7-1 WINNERS IN 7 INNING GAMES

The LMP rules call for 7 inning games when teams play a doubleheader. To make up for the game lost to Hurricane Willa on Tuesday, the Venados and the Mayos played a doubleheader on Thursday. Mazatlan took the first game 4-1 on the strength of a 3 run 2nd inning and won the nightcap 7-1 with a 4 run 2nd inning.

Sherman Johnson
In the 1st game, Sherman Johnson was 2 for 3 with a walk, 2 RBIs and a run scored for Mazatlan while team mate Alex Liddi went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Navojoa managed 3 hits in the game with Luis Fonseca going 2 for 3.

The Mayos scored an unearned run in the top of the 1st on a walk to Alonzo Harris, who went to third on a single by Fonseca, and scored on a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Victor Mendoza for the early 1-0 lead.

Mazatlan countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Liddi and Kenny Wilson singled and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Jesus Fabela. Both runners scored on a double by Johnson and Johnson scored on a double by Edson Garcia to take a 3-1 lead. The Venados would add a run in the 4th for the 4-1 win.

Alejandro Soto (1-1) worked 5 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits and striking out 6 to get the win and Evan Marshall earned his 4th save of the season. Raul Carrillo (0-1) took the loss.

In the nightcap, Mazatlan scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning on their way to the 7-1 win. Roy Merritt (1-0) pitched 5 innings of 3 hit ball giving up a run to get the win. Jose Oyervides (1-1) took the loss giving up 6 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings on the mound.
Roy Merritt

Quincy Latimore got things going for Mazatlan in the 2nd with a lead off double. Latimore stole third and Anthony Giansanti drew a walk. Latimore scored on a 5-4 force out at second to give Mazatlan a 1-0 lead. Jose Luna singled with Sebastian Valle stopping at second. After a fly out, Jesus Fabela tripled to center to score Valle and Luna. The next batter, Kenny Wilson, singled to score Fabela to give the Venados a 4-0 lead and eventually the 7-1 win for the double header sweep.

Aguilas de Mexicali Make Roster Move

LET GO EXTRANJERO PITCHER SCOTT McGOUGH

Scott McGough Stock Photo
I'm rather curious about the timing on this move...or maybe not. McGough was the reliever brought in by the Aguilas on Wednesday night to pitch the 9th inning against the Caneros de Los Mochis. To say the least, McGough wasn't effective. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits that allowed the Caneros to tie the game at 4 runs apiece. The next reliever, Adrian Martinez gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in the 10th as the Caneros came from behind to win the game.

The Aguilas deactivated McGough leaving the possibility of return to the team by 11/1.

In addition, the Aguilas activated Catcher Jibran Castro to fill the roster spot.

I do not see the Aguilas releasing Adrian Martinez in the near future.

The Aguilas also announced that DH/OF Nick Evans will be replaced by P Colin Evans. Evans was batting just .067 (1 for 15) with no home runs and no RBIs in 5 games.

Caneros Stop Aguilas 6-4 in 10 Innings

LOS MOCHIS SCORES 2 IN THE 9th TO TIE AND 2 IN THE 10th FOR THE WIN.

The Aguilas de Mexicali relief pitching fell apart late in the game with Scott McGough giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 9th to be charged with a blown save and losing pitcher Adrian Martinez (0-1) allowing 2 runs to score on 3 hits in the top of the 10th.

Andres Avila
Luis Pino (1-0) picked up the win in relief while closer Andres Avila made things interesting in the bottom half of the 10th. Avila walked CJ Retherford, gave up a single to Xorge Carrillo and walked Jon Del Campo to load the bases with 2 outs. Avila got Ricardo Serrano to fly out to center to end the game and preserve the win for Los Mochis.

Mexicali had taken a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th on a single by Jason Bourgeois, newly returned from his tenure with the LMB Champion Sultanes de Monterrey, and a 2 run home run by David Harris, his third home run of the year.

The 5-5 Caneros will face the 4-5 Aguilas in the rubber match of their series on Thursday the 25th of October.

Obregon Needs 14 Innings to Defeat Charros de Jalisco 1-0

OBREGON WINS THEIR FIRST GAME UNDER NEW MANAGER SERGIO GASTELUM

The Yaquis went 24 innings without scoring a run but when the did finally score in the bottom of the 14th inning on Wednesday it produced a 1-0 win over the Charros. Last night's game was the 2nd consecutive 1-0 games between these teams.

The teams sent a total of 15 pitchers to the mound during the game, 9 by the Charros and 6 for the Yaquis.

Tomo Otosaka Doubles
Tomo Otosaka doubled to lead off the bottom of the 14th for Obregon and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by John Nogowski. Humberto Castellanos was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play. Cheslor Cuthbert foiled those plans by tapping a slow roller down the third base line. The throw to the plate was too late as Otosaka scored the winning run and ending the 4 hour and 36 minute game with the Yaquis win.

Both pitching staffs have been very good over the last 2 games, from starters to relievers they have allowed just 2 runs in 18 innings.

The crowds for these games have not been large, about 3,300 per game, but if you like close, low scoring games, Nuevo Estadio Yaquis has been the place to be.

These two teams meet again on Thursday the 25th of October for the rubber match of the series with Jalisco at 6-4 on the season and the Yaquis with a 4-6 record.

Mayos Score 3 Runs in the 9th to Defeat Mazatlan 5-1

6 NAVOJOA PITCHERS COMBINE FOR THE WIN

The Mayos pitchers didn't allow a run until the 9th inning, holding the Venados to 3 hits in the first 8 innings, while waiting for the offense. Navojoa needed that effort because the Mazatlan held the Mayos scoreless until the 6th inning.

Navojoa took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 8th on a single by Alonzo Harris and a single to right by Elmer Reyes that put runners at first and third with no outs. Victor Mendoza ground into a double play that scored Harris as the Mayos added an insurance run.

Paul Leon
Paul Leon drew a lead off walk for Navojoa in the top of the 9th and advanced to second on a single by Luis Fonseca. Leon scored on a bunt by Fernando Flores that the Venados pitcher threw away for an error. Fonseca went to third on the play. A single by Alejandro Gonzalez scored Fonseca. A 2 out single scored Flores and the Mayos led 5-0.

The Venados scored their lone run in the bottom of the 9th on a single by Samar Leyva and a 1 out double to left by Jose Luna.

Edwin Salas (1-0) got the win for Navojoa while Daniel Guerrero (0-1) gave up the run in the 6th to take the loss for Mazatlan.

Navojoa improved to 5-3 on the young season while mazatlan fell to 5-4.

A crowd of 7,127 fans came out to Teodoro Mariscal stadium to watch the 1st post Hurricane Willa baseball game. Sadly for them, the home team lost the game. These 2 teams will play a double header on Thursday, each game 7 innings, to make up the game lost to the hurricane.

3 RUN 4th INNING DOES IT FOR TOMATEROS

Arturo Reyes (0-3), starting pitcher for the Naranjeros, ran into trouble in the 4th inning, giving up 2 doubles and a single as the Tomateros scored 3 times.

Antonio Lamas
Roemon Fields lead off the inning with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Fields scored when Luis Cruz singled to left. Reyes then got 2 outs but gave up a double to Antonio Lamas that scored Noel and Cruz for the Tomateros 3-0 lead.

Manny Barreda (2-0), the Culiacan starter, pitched 6 very good innings, scattering 3 hits and allowing a Hermosillo run in the 2nd. Casey Coleman earned his 3rd save of the young season.

With one out in the top of the 2nd, Roberto Ramos drew a walk. Jose Cardona singled with Ramos stopping at second. One out later, Jorge Flores singled to score Ramos to cut the Culiacan lead to 3-1. Hermosillo was unable to score again and the Tomateros had the 3-1 win.

13,681 fans filled Estadio de los Tomateros to watch the home team play a crisp 2 hour and 50 minute game and come away winners to improve to 6-4 while the Naranjeros fell to 3-7 on the season. These 2 teams meet again on Thursday the 25th of October for the third game of a 3 game series.

Jalisco Shutsout Obregon 1-0

WILLIAM OLIVER TOSSES 3 HITTER THROUGH 8 INNINGS

William Oliver
It's not often one can talk about a pitchers duel in the LMP, mostly because the managers change pitchers so often, but Jalisco's 1-0 win in Obregon was just that. William Oliver (2-0) pitched 8 masterful innings allowing 3 hits, all singles, before handing the ball to Grant Sides who earned his 4th save of the season.

Arturo Lopez, the Yaquis starter, matched Oliver pitch for pitch through 5 complete innings giving up 1 hit, a single, no runs and striking out 5 before being removed. The manager of the Yaquis obviously had his reasons for changing pitchers but Lopez was pitching great baseball.

Brandon Brennan (0-2) pitched the top of the 9th for Obregon giving up the lone run and taking the loss.

The Charros were held to 4 hits on the night but none bigger then their only extra base hit, a double by Kevin Medrano to lead off the top of the 9th. The next batter, Daniel Carbonell popped up the second for the 1st out. Medrano stole third setting up the best scoring opportunity Jalisco had all game. Amadeo Zazueta hit a fly ball sac fly to left that scored Medrano for the only run of the game and the Jalisco win.

Obregon did not get a runner in scoring position all game and 3 times the Yaquis runners were eliminated on double plays, one a strike'm out throw'm out DP/

Obregon Wins At Home 4-3 Over Navojoa

4 RUN 3rd INNING PROVES TO BE THE WINNER

The Mayos de Navojoa scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st to take the lead. The Mayos got 4 of their 11 hits on the night, all singles, in the inning and it looked as if this would be a high scoring game.

Leo Heras Singles
Obregon scored all of their runs in the bottom half of the 3rd. Jose Felix led off with a single. Emmanuel Avila followed with a single of his own. A passed ball moved both runners up a base. Felix scored on a ground ball out. With 2 outs, Leo Heras singled to drive in Avila and went to second on the throw home. Jesus Valdez doubled to drive in Heras and a single by John Nogowski plated Valdez for the 4-3 Yaquis lead and the eventual win.

Culiacan Weathers a 2 Run 9th Tops Mexicali 3-2

TOMATEROS PITCHERS HAD 2 HIT SHUTOUT THROUGH 8 INNINGS

Culiacan scratched out 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning to take a 3-0 lead that would prove to be enough to defeat the Aguilas 3-2.

Ryan McBroom
Roemon Fields led off the inning by drawing a walk. Rico Noel was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Henry Ramos moved the runners to second and third. Ryan McBroom walked to load the bases with 1 out. A Dylan Moore single to left scored Fields and Noel for the 3-0 lead.

The Aguilas made a game of it in the bottom of the 9th. Juan Perez drew a lead off walk and promptly stole second. A ground out moved Perez to third. David Harris doubled to score Perez and CJ Retherford followed with a single to plate Harris for the second run of the inning. Retherford was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double. This proved critical because Ricky Alvarez then singled and Xorge Carrillo walked to put runners at first and second with 2 outs instead of bases loaded with 1 out. Pinch hitter, Chuck Taylor struck out to end the game with the Tomateros the 3-2 winners.

James Russell (1-1) picked up the win and Sasagi Sanchez earned the save despite the drama that was the bottom of the 9th. Sergio Mitre (1-1) took the loss for the Aguilas.
