Charros Have Lost 7 Games in a Row

LAST WIN FOR JALISCO ON NOVEMBER 6th

On Monday the 5th of November the Charros de Jalisco were tied with the Venados de Mazatlan for 1st place in the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico (LMP). Since then the Charros have been a textbook example of futility.

Jalisco beat Mazatlan on the 6th but have lost 7 games straight since then and fallen to last place in the league with a 12-16 record, 5 games behind Culiacan in the first half of the LMP season.

The Aguilas de Mexicali and the Naranjeros de Hermosillo have shut out the Charros in 4 straight games. If you take into account the first game of the series with the Aguilas, where the Charros did not score until they scored 2 runs in the 9th, Jalisco has been held scoreless for 44 out of 45 innings.

The Charros, in getting shut out for four straight games, 36 scoreless innings, were held to 14 hits. They were pitiful with runners in scoring position going an abysmal 1 for 31 (.032) in those situations.

Although the pitching wasn't bad per say, without run support even Jacob DeGrom would find it tough to win a game.

If the Charros expect to contend in the second half of the season the hitting must improve by leaps and bounds.

Obregon Overcomes Mazatlan 4-2

YAQUIS SCORE 4 TIMES IN THE 8th FOR THE WIN

For 7 innings the Venados pitchers had control of the Yaquis. Alejandro Soto and 3 relievers held Obregon scoreless on 2 hits and struck out 7 over seven innings. But...everything came apart in the 8th. In one inning, 3 relief pitchers gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and walked 3 as the Yaquis scored four runs to get the win. Adrian Ramirez (1-1) took the loss and Brandon Cunniff was charged with his 3rd blown save of the season.

Dustin Antolin (2-0) picked up the win and Maikel Cleto earned his 1st save.

Edson Garcia
Edson Garcia singled to lead off the top of the 3rd and went to second on a throwing error by the center fielder. Garcia went to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Asael Sanchez for the 1-0 Mazatlan.

The Venados scored again in the 4th. With 2 outs, Carlos Gastelum was hit by a pitch and scored on a double to the left field corner by Sherman Johnson to increase the Mazatlan lead to 2-0.

Juan Carlos Gamboa began the bottom of the 8th with a single. With one out, Jesus Valdez singled. Cheslor Cuthbert drew a walk to load the bases. Gamboa scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 2-1. Leo Heras received an intentional pass to load the bases again. Valdez scored on a single by Moises Gutierrez to tie the game at 2. Jose Felix singled to drive in Cuthbert to give the Yaquis their first lead of the game at 3-2. With the bases still loaded, Eury Perez walked to force in Heras for the 4-2 lead and the Obregon win.

Alex Liddi then waited out a walk to load the bases with one out. Jesus Fabela was hit by a pitch to force in Johnson. Kenny Wilson singled to plate Hernandez and Liddi. Mexicali Upends Mazatlan 6-3

3 RUN HOME RUN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 9th FOR THE WIN

Watch the Aguilas celebration HERE

Yuniesky Betancourt
The Aguias de Mexicali scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 3 and then a 3 run home run by Yuniesky Betancourt in the bottom of the 9th won it. The last 5 runs scored by Mexicali all came via the home run ball.

Mazatlan had scratched out single runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to take a 3-0 lead. Two of those 3 runs came on solo home runs by Alex Liddi and Samar Leyva. The Aguilas got a run back in their half of the 6th to cut the lead to 3-1.

Mexicali, with two outs in the 8th, got a single from Juan Perez and a 2 run home run on a line drive to left off the bat of pinch hitter Ricky Alvarez to tie the game at 3.
Ricky Alvarez

In the bottom of the 9th, David Harris led off with a single. With one out, Xorge Carrillo singled to left as Harris went to third. After two mound visits to discuss strategy, Betancourt took an 0-2 pitch deep to left center for the 3 run, walk off home run and the win for the Aguilas.

Jake Sanchez (1-1), the Aguilas closer, picked up the win thanks to Betancourt's heroics. Sanchez had an exciting top of the 9th, giving up a walk, a stolen base and an intentional walk before getting a pop up to end the threat. Brandon Cuniff (0-2) was charged with a blown save and the loss for Mazatlan

Managerial Carousel Continues in the LMP

THIRD MANAGER FIRED IN 3 DAYS

Chris Woodward New Manager of the Venados
The first 2 managers fired in the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico were not too shocking. Luis Sojo was fired by the Aguilas de Mexicali and replaced by Juan Gabriel Castro. Then the Tomateros de Culiacan fired Lorenzo Bundy and replaced him with Robinson Cancel. Both the Aguilas and the Tomateros had losing records to begin the season.

This latest firing though has me thinking that the ownership of the Venados de Mazatlan have lost their collective mind. Mazatlan today fired manager Jose Alvarez. He has been replaced by Chris Woodward. What strikes me as strange in this transaction is that Alvarez had the Venados in 1st place in the LMP. 3 of the top 5 hitters in the league play for Mazatlan. Konner Wade is tied for the league lead in wins and is tops in ERA.

The only thing I can figure is that Woodward comes with a pedigree. For the last two seasons he was he 3rd base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With the Dodgers so popular in Mexico I guess the name recognition will put "butts in the seats" as the saying goes.

The Venados average about 10,000 fans per game so that can't be it.

Maybe this is a favor for the Dodgers who might want Woodward to get some managerial experience so they can let him manage one of their AAA teams in the States.

But for now, Jose Alvarez is out of a job/ Only time will tell if this was a wise choice for the Venados.

Aguilas Shut out Again as Venados Win 6-0

MEXICALI SCORELESS IN 3 OF THEIR LAST 5 GAMES

The Venados jumped on top early scoring twice in the top of the 2nd. Alex Liddi began the inning with a single and Anthony Giansanti drew a walk. A fly ball out advanced both runners. With runners at second and third, a single by Jesus Fabela scored Liddi and Giansanti for the 2-0 Mazatlan lead.

Sebastian Valle
Sebastian Valle launched a 2 run home run to left in the 4th that scored Fabela. Kenny Wilson followed with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Edson Garcia to increase the Venados lead to 5-0.

Mazatlan added a run in the 8th. Valle was hit by a pitch with 2 outs. Wilson singled and a single by Sherman Johnson scored Valle with the 6th and final run of the night. The Venados had the 6-0 shutout and improved to 11-8 on the season. This win, coupled with the Charros loss to Culiacan gives the Venados a share of 1st place in the LMP.

Konner Wade (3-0) tossed 6 innings of 3 hit shutout baseball while striking out 5. Frankie De La Cruz (0-1), on the other hand, gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and walked 3 in 3 1/3 innings on the mound to take the loss as the Aguilas fell to 8-10 on the year.
