4 Umps Named to 1st World Series Crew

Four veteran umpires, with an average of 15 years experience, have been named to the crew of the 2014 World Series. Jerry Meals, Hunter Wendelstedt, Eric Cooper and Jim Reynolds will be calling their 1st Series.

An umpire's entire body of work is evaluated when assigning postseason series, and we always strive to have the most deserving umpires working postseason games,'' MLB spokesman Michael Teevan said.

''This year,'' he added, ''instant replay also became another facet of performance.''
Several factors determine which umpires get picked for the playoffs and World Series by MLB. Ball-strike ratings on plate jobs, skill at handling situations on the field, experience and time missed during the season are all considered.

Mark Townsend, of Big League Stew, has an interesting story about their selections and replay review in Major League Baseball. Read Mark's story here.

Blake Griffin "Could" Retaliate For Cheap Fouls

Blake Griffin , of the LA Clippers, is getting pretty fed up with hard, cheap fouls. In a preseason victory over the Utah Jazz, Griffin and Trevor Booker had to be separated after a foul by Booker led to Griffin grabbing the back of Booker's head. Griffin was pulled away by teammates.

"I was going to but then I thought its preseason," Griffin said when asked about retaliating. "It's not worth it, that's not the person I want to waste it on."

Seattle Trades Percy Harvin to NY Jets

ESPN is reporting that the Seattle Seahawks have traded Percy Harvin to the NY Jets for a conditional draft pick in the 2015 draft. Sources say that this could be from a 2nd through a 4th round pick.

Read the ESPN story here.

Jets Lose to Pats 27-25 Drop To 1-6

The NY Jets ran for 218 yards, controlled the ball for almost 41 minutes and had no turnovers. Geno Smith was 20 of 34 for 226 yards and a touchdown. Given these stats it could be assumed that the Jets won.

Sadly, they lost. Nick Folk was 4 for 5 on field goal attempts. His last try, from 58 yards, was blocked by Chris Jones on the last play of the game to preserve the Patriot's 27-25 win.

The Patriots improved to 5-2 on the year while the Jets have lost 6 in a row and are on the brink of elimination from the playoffs with a 1-6 record. Realistically with 9 games remaining, the Jets would have to win out to have a chance.

Tom Brady was 20 for 37 for 261 yards with 2 touchdown passes to Shane Vereen, including a 49 yard catch and run, and 1 TD pass to Danny Amendola, his only catch of the night.

The Jet defense, ranked 5th in the league overall, held the New England patriots to 63 yards on 15 carries.

Chris Ivory had 107 yards on the ground for the Jets on 21 carries with a touchdown and Jeff Cumberland had 3 catches for 50 yards and a TD.

The Jets sacked Tom Brady once while the Patriots got to Geno Smith 3 times for -21 yards.

Adan Munoz led off the 3rd for Hermosillo with a double. With one out Jorge Flores singled and took second on the throw to third trying to get Munoz. Jerry Owens singled and Munoz scored with Flores moving to third. Carlos Gastelum hit a sac fly to right that scored Flores and the Naranjeros had a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

Hermosillo scored one run in the 6th and two more in the 8th for the final margin of victory, 8-3.

Manny Rodriguez and Japhet Amador were both 2 for 4 with Amador getting an RBI. Gabriel Gutierrez was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Eduardo Arredondo had the other RBI for the Charros.

Venados de Mazatlan leads the Liga de Mexicana del Pacifico standings at 4-1 with four teams at 3-2, two teams at 2-3 and Mayo de Navojos remains winless at 0-5.

The Charros de Jalisco (3-2) travel to Culiacan today to take on the Tomateros de Culiacan (2-3).

It's On To The World Series After KC Downs O's 2-1 In Game 4 Of ALCS

The Royals jumped on top of the Baltimore Orioles 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back.

Alcides Escobar reached on an infield single to deep short off of O's starter, Miguel Gonzalez, to lead off the inning. Norichika Aoki was hit by a pitch. Lorenzo Cain sacrificed the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Eric Hosmer grounded into what looked like a fielder's choice but a throwing error by Orioles catcher, Caleb Joseph allowed Escobar and Aoki to score. The O's got out of the inning but the damage was done.

Baltimore got a run back on a solo home run by Ryan Flaherty in the top of the 3rd to make it a 2-1 ball game but the Royals pitching staff took over and shut down the O's the rest of the way.

Jason Vargas went 5 1/3 innings for the win, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. Kelvin Herrera allowed 1 hit and no runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. Wade Davis held Baltimore scoreless in the 8th and Greg Holland picked up his 4th save shutting down the Orioles in the top of the 9th.

Lorenzo Cain became the first #3 hitter to lay down a sacrifice bunt in the first inning in a postseason game since Steve Garvey did it in the 1984 World Series.

Ned Yost takes over the top spot for consecutive wins by a manager in a postseason series with his 8th consecutive win.

Selfish Moves by Selfish Players?

Matt Hayes of Sporting News has a great article outlining the Todd Gurley/Jameis Winston autograph signing debacle. Personally I agree with choice #1 on how to solve the NCAA rule.

Who Predicted the Cowboy's Would Improve on Their 8-8 Record?

Did anyone, not a Cowboy fan, think that Dallas would be in the playoffs this year?

ESPN The Magazine had a panel of  64 "experts" in their NFL 2014 season preview and exactly one person predicted that the Cowboys would be in the playoffs this season.

KC Joyner, the ESPN Fantasy football expert, was the lone supporter of the Cowboy's playoff hopes.

Read the ESPN article here to see the experts opinions now. Ashley Fox, ESPN's NFL writer, goes so far to opine that the Cowboys could be on a 10 game winning streak before they take on the Eagles for 2 games in 3 weeks in November.

My how times have changed!

Royals Take Commanding 3-0 Lead in ALCS

The Kansas City Royals have won their seventh consecutive game in the 2014 American League playoffs. Jason Frasor got the win while Greg Holland picked up the save. Wei-Yin Chen suffered the loss for the Orioles.

Although Kansas City is up 3 games to none in the ALCS, Game 3 was not assured until Steve Pearce grounded out to second for the third out of the Orioles 9th inning.

Jeremy Guthrie started for the Royals and threw 5 innings of 3 hit ball giving up the lone O's run. He threw 94 pitches of which 63 were strikes. Wei-Yin Chen started for the Orioles and matched Guthrie pitch for pitch through 5 1/3 innings, giving up 7 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikouts while allowing 2 earned runs. Chen threw only 80 pitches and 53 of them were strikes. Both starters were around the plate all night.

The Orioles would get on the board first. Guthrie gave up back-to-back doubles to Steve Pearce and JJ Hardy. Pearce scored the only O's run in the game on Hardy's double and Baltimore led 1-0.

In the bottom of the 4th, Lorenzo Cain singled with one out. Eric Hosmer singled to right and Billy Butler walked to load the bases. Alex Gordon then grounded out to second to score Cain and the game was tied at 1.

Chen gave up a lead off single to Norichika Aoki in the Royal's half of the 6th. Jarrod Dyson entered the game as a pinch runner for Aoki. After Lorenzo Cain struck out, Eric Hosmer singled and Dyson moved to third. Billy Butler hit the second pitch he saw from O's reliever, Kevin Gausman, to deep left for a sacrifice fly that scored Dyson and the Royals had their first lead of the night at 2-1.

Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect 7th, striking out two. Wade Davis worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Royal's closer, Greg Holland, got Adam Jones to pop up to second, Nelson Cruz to foul out to right and Steve Pearce to hit into a ground out to second to preserve the win for Frasor and pick up his third save.

34 teams have been down 3 games to none in MLB playoff history and only the 2004 Boston Red Sox have come back to win and advance.

Ned Yost, manager of the Royals, joins Clint Hurdle as the only managers in MLB history to win their first 7 playoff games.

40,183 Royals fans watched their team get to within one game of the World Series. The ALCS continues tonight and a Royals win will have them in the World Series for the first time since winning it all in 1985.

Jorge Flores then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

And You Thought Flopping Was Bad?

Obvious "flops" in sports contests are funny. If it happens against your team and the ref misses it, it's maddening. If your team gets away with one, well...so be it.

For the Soccer world it isn't quite so easy to get away with a flop but that doesn't stop athletes from attempting them. Leandro Damiao tries a very lame soccer flop in the videos. Chile's Bryan Carrasco literally takes one for the team, except he did it to himself in the second video.

Can the Orioles Come Back From an 0-2 Deficit?

On paper the Orioles should be the team with the 2 game advantage, They won the American League East by 12 Games. On paper, the Royals couldn't hit a home run off a "tee" this year. They finished last in the American League in home runs.

Billy Butler stole a base. On paper he couldn't steal a base with a 45' head start. Butler stole a base.

So...should you count the Orioles out? On paper, no team has come back from losing the first two games of a 7 game series at home and advanced to the World Series.

But we don't play the games on paper. The Orioles have great pitching, great hitting and good defense. The Royals do too.

Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday night should be a great game. The Royal's fans yearn for a winner. They are reliving 1985, the last time the Royals even made the playoffs.

Ryan Fagan, of Sporting News, has a very good story about this series. Be sure to read it here before popping the champaign for the Royals. But, don't count the Royals out either.

I could probably be less sure of the outcome of this ALCS but I doubt it!

Florida State to Investigate Winston Autographs

Florida State University has begun investigating how 340+ items with Jameis Winston's autograph have shown up on the web pages for James Spence Authentications (JSA). JSA was recently in the news for authenticating 500+ items signed by suspended UGA Bulldog Todd Gurley.

FSU has not been contacted on the matter by the ACC or the NCAA, but the university's compliance department has begun to specifically look into how JSA received such a large number of signatures.

"Kids sign things all the time," Jimbo Fisher, head coach of the Seminoles said after Saturday's game. "So what do you want them to do, stop signing stuff? We could make them not have any fans from that standpoint and not sign for anybody. That's what it's going to come to, and that's a shame for college football, that somebody exploits a kid. Now if they're getting paid for it, then I don't have any knowledge of that. I don't believe Jameis did."

Fisher also said that Jameis told him that he didn't take any money for the autographs. So while Todd Gurley was suspended by UGA immediately, no action will be taken against Winston until the investigation is complete.

What an indictment of the ACC when the SEC takes the moral high ground.

D'Backs Hire Chip Hale as Manager

The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Chip Hale to replace fired manager Kirk Gibson for the 2015 season.

Check out the video of that play here.

Mexico National Soccer Team Beats Panama 1-0, But...

The Mexico National Soccer team, El Tri, beat the Panama team 1-0 of Sunday. El Tri looked sluggish and unable to work well against a team that played close defense and tried to shorten the field.

This game, and the one against Honduras on Thursday, have shown that the Mexico team still plays like they did in the World Cup when these weaknesses were first exposed.

Things will bet harder for El Tri in it's march through CONCACAF which of 54 teams in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Associations Football.

Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle says Chandler Parsons Should "Shed Some Weight"

Carlisle thought about what he said when he singled out Chandler Parsons for being overweight and out of shape following an exhibition game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

Carlisle said in a statement, "I also made it clear to our players and staff this morning that this type of bad example is not acceptable and beneath the dignity of a championship organization like the Dallas Mavericks."

This is the second time this preseason that the Mav's coach has questioned Parsons' conditioning.

Eagles Shut Out Giants 27-0

The Philadelphia Eagles shut down and shut out the NY Giants on Sunday night 27-0. With the eagles lack of offense the past couple of weeks this was comforting to the Eagles fans.

Conversely, the Giants fans, who had high hopes after the last two weeks need to be concerned. With the Eagles and the Cowboys both at 5-1, the Giants will have to play extremely well against Division and Conference opponents to make the playoffs.

By the way, this was the Eagles first shutout in 18 years! Their last shutout came against the NY Giants on December 1, 1996.

Jarrod Dyson of the Royals Channels Joe Namath

Joe Namath famously predicted his heavily underdog NY Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III and his prognostication became reality when the Jets won 16-7.

Jarrod Dyson has predicted that his Kansas City Royals would not be returning to Baltimore for a game 6 in the ALCS.

When asked by Kansas City Star reporter Andy McCullough if Dyson expects the game to return to Baltimore for a 6th game, Dyson said, "No sir, I don't and I don't think the Orioles think that way either".

Panthers 37, Bengals 37

It's not often an NFL game ends in a tie but if it had to happen, it would happen to the Cincinnati Bengals. On a day when the Browns thump the Steelers a victory by the Bengals would have been a full game up on the Browns at 4-1. Instead they "fall" to 3-1-1.

Jalisco Charros defeat Aguilas de Mexicali 4-2

The Charros de Jalisco evened their league record at 1-1 with a 4-2 victory over the Aguilars de Mexicali on Saturday night in Zapopan.

Mexicali continued their hot hitting by scoring in the bottom of the 1st when Brock Peterson hit a long home run to right off of Charros starter Ben Kozlowski. Kozlowski played for the Sugarland Skeeters of the Atlantic league in 2014 and both the Texas Rangers and Hiroshima Toyo Carp at the big league level.

The Aguilas would score another run in the 4th. Mike Jacobs singled and moved to second when Luke Montz walked. A wild pitch by Kozlowski advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Jacobs scored when Xorge Carrillo grounded to second. Kozlowski was able to get out of the jam without further damage and the Aguilas led 2-0.

Jalisco tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth. Jesus Lopez singled and came around to score on Leo Heras' first home run of the season.

The Charros scored again in the 7th. Wilson Batista drew a one out walk. Gabriel Gutierrez singled and Batista stopped at second. Jesus Lopez followed with a single to center that scored Batista and gave Jalisco the 3-2 lead.

In the top of the 9th, Marquez Smith was hit by a pitch and Wilson Batista walked. After Cory Vaughn and Gabriel Gutierrez struck out, Jesus Lopez walked to load the bases. Eduardo Arrendondo singled to drive in Smith and give the Charros the final 4-2 margin of victory.

Jesus Lopez, hitting .429 for the year, was 2 for 3 on the day with an RBI and 1 run scored. Leo Heras hit his home run for his only hit in four at bats  but that was good for a run scored and 2 RBIs. Marquez Smith and Wilson Batista, hitting .333 on the young season, both scored a run in the victory.

Ben Kozlowski worked five complete innings on the hill for the Charros giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs while walking 2 and striking out 6. Alan Guerrero picked up the win in relief of Kozlowski and David Koop recorded his first save of the year.

Royals Take Game 1 of ALCS with Extra Inning Win in Baltimore

The Kansas City Royals, in this postseason, have doubled the rate at which they hit home runs during the regular season. Almost  4% of their at bats have resulted in home runs.

Coming into this postseason no Royal hitter had ever hit a go ahead home run in extra innings. These Royals have done it three times. Alcides Escobar homered last night. He had only 3 HRs in 500+ at bats during the regular season.

Why all the talk about home runs. The Royals didn't hit many HRs during the season. They won the small ball way. They won with speed on the basepaths, good bunting, timely hitting and good pitching.

Alex Gordon of the Royals had this to say about the power surge, "We know we're capable of hitting home runs. We didn't do it during the regular season, but it doesn't really matter. This is the postseason and we're starting to swing the bats better now."

After 162 regular season games it's nice to know the Royals are finally warming up.

Kansas City threatened to walk away with game 1 early when they scored 4 runs in the top of the third. With one out, Alcides Escobar sent a Chris Tillman 0-2 pitch over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead. Norichika Aoki singled to left and Lorenzo Cain drew a four pitch walk. Billy Butler beat out an infield single to load the bases. Alex Gordon then worked the count full before doubling to right to clear the bases and drive in 3 of his 4 runs on the night. The Ryals led 4-0 after their half of the 3rd.

Baltimore got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd. Nick Markakis doubled off of James Shields. Adam Jones singled to drive in Markakis to narrow the lead to 4-1.

In the top of the 5th, Lorenzo Cain hit a lead off double to right. Cain moved to third on an Eric Hosmer ground out to second. Tommy Hunter relieved Orioles starter Chris Tillman and Billy Butler hit a sac fly to center to score Cain for the 5-1 lead.

Baltimore came roaring back off Shields in the bottom of the 5th. Nick Markakis singled to left and Alejandro De Aza singled to right. Adam Jones hit into a fielder's choice that got Markakis at third. Nelson Cruz doubled to score De Aza and the Orioles had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Steve Pearce walked to load the bases. After JJ Hardy struck out, Ryan Flaherty singled to drive in Jones and Cruz and the lead was now 5-4.

Brandon Finnegan replaced Shields to start the bottom of the 6th. Lead off hitter Jonathan Schoop waited out an 8 pitch walk. Nick Markakis singled and the Orioles had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Alejandro De Aza reached on an infield single to score Schoop and that would be all for Finnegan. Kelvin Herrera replaced Finnegan and got Adams to hit into a fielder's choice and Nelson Cruz to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, but the Orioles had tied the game at 5.

The scored remained knotted at 5 until the top of the 10th. Darren O'Day in relief of Zach Britton gave up a lead off home run to Alex Gordon and walked Salvador Perez. Buck Showalter replaced O'Day with Brian Matusz. Mike Moustakas worked the count to 2-2 before parking a Matusz pitch into the bleachers in right center.. the Royals had an 8-5 lead through 9 1/2 innings.

Greg Holland came in for the Royals to close out the victory. He quickly got two outs then Ryan Flaherty singled. Jimmy Paredes, hitting for Nick Hundley, walked. Delmon Young, pinch hitting for Jonathan Schoop, singled to score Flaherty. The Royals lead was down to 8-6. Holland got Nick Markakis to ground out to second to preserve the Royals 4th extra inning victory in their last 5 games.

Wade davis picked up the win for Kansas City while Dan O'Day took the loss for the Orioles. Greg Holland recorded the save.

Charros de Jalisco Lose Opener of the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico

The Charros de Jalisco dropped their Liga Mexicana del Pacifico opener to Aguilas de Mexicali by a score of 8-1.

Mexicali scored 1 run in the first inning, single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings and put the game away on a 3 run home run by Luke Montz in the top of the 5th.

Juan Salvador Delgadillo started for the Charros and took the loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 4 earned runs. Delgadillo walked one and struck out 2. Mario Meza got the win in relief of Javier Solano who pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball but didn't pitch the required 5 complete innings to get the win. Solano gave up 3 hits but gave up 6 walks in his stint on the mound.

The Charros committed 3 errors during the game that led to 2 unearned runs for Mexicali.

Aguila de Mexicali scored run number 7 in the top of the 7th. Reliever Antonio Carzon struck out the first 2 Aguilas he faced then gave up a single to Mike Jacobs. Jacobs last played in the major leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012. In 2009 he played for the Kansas City Royals, batting .228 with 19 HRs and 61 RBIs. Luke Montz, who appeared in 13 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2013, followed with his first double of the year to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Shane Peterson, who played for the Oakland A's Pacific Coast League's Sacramento River Cats in 2014 hitting .308 in 137 games with 11 HRs and 90 RBIs, singled to drive in Jacobs to make the score 7-0.

Jalisco got on the board in the bottom of the 8th when Wilson Batista, who played for Lancaster of the Atlantic League in 2013, singled with one out. Cory Vaughn, son of former major leaguer, Greg Vaughn and LA Dodger prospect, followed with a triple to score Batista and narrowed the gap to 7-1.

Luke Montz hit a solo home run, his second of the night, off of Charros' reliever Hugo Castellanos that made the final score 8-1.

Cory Vaughn was 2 for 3 on the night with a double and a triple and the lone RBI for the Charros. Jose Rodriguez was 2 for 5 for the Charros.

Luke Montz was 3 for 5 with 2 HRs and 4 RBIs for Mexicali. Shane Peterson was 2 for 5 while Ramon Rios and Brock Peterson were both 2 for 4.

The Charros take on these same Aguilas on Saturday at the Panamerican Athletics Stadium in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico.

NCAA Players Need to be Paid to Play an Editorial

This week, Todd Gurley, a Junior running back and possible Heisman trophy winner in 2014,  of the Georgia Bulldogs was suspended from the football team and is under investigation by the NCAA for selling his autograph. Gurley faces the real possibility that he will not play the remainder of the year for Georgia and could lose his scholarship.

The University of Georgia, as is required by NCAA rules, suspended Gurley when they became aware of the allegations.

Gurley is accused of being paid $400 to sign 80 items for Bryan Allen an Atlanta sports memorabilia dealer, on campus, in early spring. Doing the math, that works out to $5 per item. Supposedly there are photos and video of the signings, although none have surfaced yet.

Rules are rules and Gurley should have known better, if what is alledged is true, but this problem did not start with Todd Gurley nor will this be the end of it.

It is time that the NCAA realizes that athletes at big time universities are treated like chattel.

The arguments that the schools, and the NCAA, use to justify this indentured servitude are simple. They feel that a 4 year scholarship to a university, worth in the neighborhood of $200,000, over 4 years is sufficient payment for services. The second argument is that, starting this year, the athlete can earn up to $2,000 per academic year at employment on or off campus not associated with the athletic department. A final argument is that schools can't afford to pay their athletes.

To counter those arguments I would argue that sports scholarships are not guaranteed, by most universities, for 4 years but are on a yearly basis and can be revoked for many reasons both academic and non-academic. There are some universities that have started to guarantee those scholarships but not nearly enough. Given that the academic year, in most cases, runs from September through May, a 9 month period, that $2,000 earned works out to $222 a month.

These are the arguments put forth by the colleges/universities and the NCAA as to why they can't afford any changes to the current rules and regulations put forth by the NCAA and approved by the Deans of member colleges/universities.

Here are the reasons I have for a change in idea at the NCAA level.

Schools make millions of dollars off of these athletes. Here is a list of ways in which the schools and the NCAA make that money:

1.  Ticket sales to athletic events
2.  Concessions and Parking at those events
3.  Visiting team remuneration packages (The University of Idaho was to be paid $900,000 dolllars for their trip to play the University of Florida)
4.  Conference TV money (ESPN paid the SEC 2.25 billion dollars to broadcast their games through the 2026-2027 seasons. That's $150,000,000 per year for the SEC which works out to $10,700,000 per year/per school)
5. Local TV/Radio Money (considerably less than TV money, but income none the less)
6. Stadium advertising money
7. Bowl game revenue (if selected for bowl games, all revenue generated by teams in the conferenece is divided among all conference teams)
8. Jersey and sports memorabilia sales (University and the NCAA split this revenue)
9. Alumni giving to sports departments
10. Video game revenue (note lawsuits by former players over lost revenue)
11. Nike Sponsorship

Students who receive non sports scholarships are not limited as to the amount of time they can spend at employment. They can earn as much as they need to in order to pay for incidentals while attending college.

What Todd Gurley did was against the NCAA rules. He knew, or should have known, that what he was doing was against those rules. His suspension by the University of Georgia was done in accordance with those same rules governing universities and self reporting.

But Georgia will play football this weekend. They will travel to Columbia, Missouri to take on the Tigers in a game with SEC West Division implications. Todd Gurley will remain in Georgia while the University of Georgia and the NCAA decide his fate.

The NCAA must rethink it's rules on paying players to play. I remember when Title IX was going to absolutely ruin college sports. Has that happened? No. The universities were required to rethink their positions and make college athletics fair to all. Coming up with a fair way to pay players so that they don't feel the need to break the rules will not ruin college sports either.

There are now allegations (10/13/14) that 2014 Heisnan Trophy winner Jameis Winston has had over 100 signatures authenticated by the same firm that authenticated those signatures of Todd Gurley. When asked, Florida State Head Coach, Jimbo Fisher had this to say, "I asked Jameis if he took money for signing those autographs...he told me no."

There you have it folks, in the SEC the player is suspended right away. In the ACC, and the #2 Seminoles, the player said he didn't get any money so...nothing to see here...move along.

Chris Bosh Dishes on Playing With LeBron

According to a story by Eric Freeman in Yahoo Sports, Chris Bosh has warned that playing alongside of LeBron James can be "different". Of course when you are playing with a super star things will be different and players of lesser stature will have to adjust.

I always thought that the 3 "stars" would have a rough time playing together in Miami. They had tremendous success, that is a given, but they didn't live up to the hype. They didn't win the Championship every year. How dare they!

Eric Freeman who writes in "Ball Don't Lie" for Yahoo Sports has a very good article about Bosh and his trials with LeBron and the Heat.

UCF Wins in OT Against BYU 31-24

Last nigh's contest between the Knights of UCF and the Cougars of BYU was exciting to say the least. Christian Stewart, replacing BYU QB Taysom Hill, did a very credible job going 22 for 37. He threw 3 TD passes and had 1 INT.

Justin Stewart, for the Knights was 30/51 for 326 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. but the second of his TD throws came on the first drive in OT on a 4 yard toss to William Stanback out of the backfield.

The game had plenty of momentum swings. UCF went on top 10-0 early. BYU then scored 24 unanswered points to take a 24-10 lead. The Knights came back with 14 of their own points to tie the game in regulation before scoring in OT for the win.

Tim Kurkjian's 5 Questions for the NLCS

Four of the past eight World Series champions have come from the teams in this 2014 National League Championship Series, which might suggest that the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals have spectacular talent. Instead, they are more great organizations that teach the game properly, that every at-bat is a fistfight, and every pitch is the biggest one of the game. Each had less talent than their opponents in the division series, but the Giants were more tough-minded and October-tested than the Washington Nationals, and the Cardinals were focused on winning while the Los Angeles Dodgers were thinking too much about tipping pitches and the strike zone. Now these two will meet in the playoffs for the fourth time. The Cardinals are the first team since the 1998-2001 New York Yankees to go to four straight league championship series. And the Giants will be going for the third time in five years. It should really be great.

Here are five questions.
Bumgarner

In what sort of shape is the Giants' rotation?

Very good. Ace Madison Bumgarner has thrown very well in this postseason -- and every postseason -- save for one wild throw to third base on a bunt in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Nationals. He has pitched much better on the road than at home this year, and will start Game 1 in St. Louis. The Giants support him well, scoring 5.03 runs per start during the regular season; only Clayton Kershaw and Jorge De La Rosa received better run support among NL starters. Jake Peavybattled through 5⅔ innings to win Game 1 of the NLDS, and Tim Hudson was terrific in Game 2. Ryan Vogelsong lifted the Giants in Game 4 with 5⅔ innings of solid work, this coming off a September in which he went 0-4 with a 5.53 ERA. What happens to him in October is amazing. He has made five straight October starts (his only five), allowing one run or less; only Curt Schilling, with six, has a longer streak in postseason history. Vogelsong's 1.19 ERA is the third-best in postseason history among those with at least five starts, trailing only Sandy Koufax and Christy Mathewson.
Wainwright

In what short of shape is the Cardinals' rotation?

A little unsettled. Ace Adam Wainwright got hammered in Game 1 against the Dodgers, but didn't get the loss because Kershaw got hit harder. Kershaw came back on short rest while the Cardinals weren't even committing to Wainwright for Game 5. He had some arm issues in August, pitched through them in September, but says he is ready to go in Game 1. The rest of the Cardinals' rotation -- John Lackey, Lance Lynn and Shelby Miller -- did very well in the NLDS. Lackey, who has thrown more postseason innings than any active pitcher, is past his tired-arm stage down the stretch, and his good, biting slider is back. The Giants were just 30-30 against left-handed starters this year; the Indians and A's were the only other teams to be .500 or below against lefties, but above .500 against right-handers. And the only starting pitchers the Giants are going to see in this series are righties.
Belt

How do the Giants score runs?

It's hard to tell sometimes. In the clinching Game 4 against the Nationals, they scored their three runs on a bases-loaded walk, a ground ball to the first baseman and a wild pitch. They were terrible with runners in scoring position against the Nationals, but somehow got enough big hits to win three times. In Game 2 of the NLDS, for instance, Brandon Belt became the first player ever to hit a game-deciding home run at the time that he was 0-for-6 in a game. The Giants beat the Nationals despite a 2-for-18, no-runs-scored performance from their leadoff man, Gregor Blanco, and while platooning in left field with Travis Ishikawa and Juan Perez. In the NLDS, when they faced a right-handed starter they had no left-handed hitter coming off the bench. Their hope is that left fielder Michael Morse, who missed most of September with an oblique strain, will be active for this series. But even if that's the case, the Giants' lineup is not imposing. Yet they seem to find a way to score just enough to win.
Carpenter

From where did the Cardinals' power come?

They finished last in the league (and 29th overall) in home runs with 105, then hit seven in four games against the Dodgers. Cardinals third baseman Matt Carpenterbecame the first player in postseason history to hit a home run and a double in three straight games. And first baseman Matt Adams became the first player since Miguel Olivo in 2012 to hit a home run with at least two men on base against Kershaw. They took Kershaw deep three times, beating him twice, and pounding the Dodgers' bullpen. The Cardinals did not enter the seventh inning with a lead in any of the four games, but won three of them by outscoring the Dodgers 15-4 in the seventh through ninth innings. And they did it with power, left-handed power: Cardinals left-handed hitters hit five homers against left-handed pitching, second most in a postseason. The Giants' best pitcher is lefty Madison Bumgarner.

Does either team have an edge in the bullpen?

It's close. The Giants' bullpen saved the series with 10⅔ scoreless innings in the pivotal 18-inning win in Game 2 of the NLDS. Yusmeiro Petit threw six shutout innings, 80 pitches and had more strikeouts in extra innings (seven) than any pitcher has ever had in one postseason game. Set-up man Sergio Romo had his good slider back against the Nationals, and Santiago Casilla has done very well since becoming the closer in July. The Giants have won all of the past nine one-run games that they have played in the postseason, a tribute in part to their deep, versatile bullpen. The Cardinals' bullpen was very good against the Dodgers, specifically closer Trevor Rosenthal. He and the rest of that bullpen got some very big outs: They became the first team in postseason history to win each game of a series despite having the tying run on base when the last out was made in each victory.
The pick: Cardinals in seven.

University of Georgia Running Back Todd Gurley Suspended

Georgia Bulldogs tailback Todd Gurley has been suspended indefinitely pending an investigation into an alleged violation of NCAA rules, the school announced Thursday.
"I'm obviously very disappointed," Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. "The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri."
[+] EnlargeTodd Gurley, Georgia
David Goldman/AP ImagesGeorgia tailback Todd Gurley has rushed for 773 yards and eight TDs on 94 carries this season.
The school made the announcement Thursday, two days before the No. 13 Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 SEC) face No. 23 Missouri (4-1, 1-0) in a crucial Eastern Division game.
Georgia officials did not reveal the alleged violation.
Gurley, one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy, was leading the SEC with 773 rushing yards and had scored eight touchdowns in the first five games for the Bulldogs.
He ran for 163 yards and two TDs against Vanderbilt while also completing a 50-yard pass -- Georgia's longest of the season. Gurley is the conference's leading rusher with 154.6 yards per game, and his 194.6 all-purpose yards ranks second nationally behind Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah (195.8).
With 3,147 rushing yards, Gurley needs 86 to pass Garrison Hearst for second on the school's all-time list.
Freshman Nick Chubb, who has rushed for 224 yards and two scores and also has a TD pass, would be next in line for carries. The Bulldogs have run the ball at least 35 times in every game while making no more than 26 passing attempts.
Sony Michel, another freshman, has rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 23 attempts, but suffered a shoulder injury against Tennessee.
Georgia is opening a four-game stretch that includes two other road contests against Arkansas and Kentucky, as well as its annual showdown with rival Florida in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs will go 42 days between home games -- their most since 2008.
Gurley, a junior who is averaging more than 8 yards per carry, was ranked ninth overall on the latest NFL draft "Big Board" by ESPN Insider Mel Kiper Jr.

LeBron and the Cavs face Heat in Brazil

LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers will face the Miami Heat in Rio. This preason clash will be the first meeting between the Cavs and the Heat since the "2nd Great Departure" of James.

"They made sure it'd be the two teams I'd sign with," James said with a smile.

The NBA scheduled this game after Lebron made the move to Cleveland to get the most publicity possible. The people of South America, especially Brazil love basketball and LeBrom James.

The NBA got what it wanted. James is in Brazil for what surely will be an awkward five days. Rio is a world-class destination and many players have been looking forward to sitting on the beach and enjoying the nightlife in a rare training camp quasi-vacation, but James just wants to get it over with.

Royals and Orioles Got to the ALCS by Different Paths

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN Sports has an excellent article on the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles and how they got to this years ALCS.

The series, that starts Friday the 10th, pits idea against idea, strength against strangth and budget against budget.

While Baltimore relies heavily on power hitting and the long ball, the Royals, out of necessity, rely on small, defense and pitching.
