Naranjeros Over Yaquis 6-2

14,276 FANS WATCH HERMOSILLO WIN AT HOME

Luis Mendoza
To say the least the Yaquis have had trouble scoring as of late. After scoring 3 runs in 3 games against the Charros, although they took 2 out of 3, they were held to 2 runs in Hermosillo in Friday's loss. Luis Mendoza (1-0) pitched 7 innings of 3 hit ball, allowing the 2 Yaquis runs and striking out 6 to get the win for the Naranjeros.

The Obregon starter, Sean Nolin (0-1) was touched for 5 runs on 5 hits in 4 1.3 innings to take the loss. Nolin walked 4 batters while striking out 5.

Hermosillo tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on 2 singles and a walk to load the bases. Cedric Hunter singled to drive in Rolando Acosta and Jasson Atondo for the 2-2 tie.

The Naranjeros broke the game open in their half of the the 5th. Eric Young Jr. walked. Hunter singled to right. Danny Espinosa drew a base on balls to load the bases. Jose Amador, the next batter, also walked to force in Young. After an injury delay, a mound visit and a pitching change, Roberto Ramos doubled to score Hunter and Espinosa for the 5-2 lead and after adding a run in the 7th, Hermosillo had the 6-2 win.

After starting the season 1-6, the Naranjeros improved to 5-7 while the Yaquis fell to 5-7 on the year.

Yaquis Drop Charros 2-1 in 11 Innings

WALK OFF HIT BY PITCH DOES IN JALISCO

The Yaquis de Obregon and the Charros de Jalisco plated a 3 game series in Obregon with the Taquis taking 2 of 3. The story is this. The 2 teams played 2 extra inning games, one 14 innings and yesterday's 11 inning contest scoring just 5 runs in 34 innings. To have the game yesterday end on a walk off Hit By Pitch seems to be a travesty of justice.

Jalisco won the 1st game of the series 1-0 in regulation. Obregon took game 2 by a 1-0 score in 14 innings on a walk off slow roller to third and the Yaquis needed 11 innings to come away with the win in game 3.The series did nothing to help with batting averages but helped immensely with ERAs.

The teams used a total of 14 pitchers in this game seven by each side.

Tomas Solis
Tomas Solis (1-0) pitched the top of the 11th to get the win while Luis De La O (1-1) gave up a run on a walk, 2 hit batters and a hit in the bottom of the 11th to take the loss.

Cheslor Cuthbert scored the Yaquis 1st run in the 2nd inning on a throwing error by the Charros second Baseman for the early 1-0 Yaquis lead.

Jalisco tied the game in the 4th  on walks to Manny Rodriguez and Japhet Amador and a single by Dariel Alvarez that scored Rodriguez from second.

The game came down to this. The Charros reliever, Luis De La O, gave up a single to Tomo Otosaka, who went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jesus Valdez was intentionally walked and Cuthbert was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. A pop up to third for the second out brought Jose Aguilar to the plate. De La O hit Aguilar with a pitch to force in Otosaka with the winning run.
Tomo Otosaka

The Charros fell to 6-5 on the year with the Yaquis improving to 5-6.

Yaquis Bests Previously Unbeaten Venados 8-3

OBREGON'S 4 RUN 3nd INNING DOES IN MAZATLAN

The Yaquis got to 5 Venados pitchers for 17 hits and 8 runs, including a home run by Juan Carlos Gamboa, as Obregon beat the previously unbeaten Venados 8-3.

Jesus Angulamea (1-0) won the game in relief of starter Dallas Martinez. Yaquis pitchers struck out 13 batters. Alejandro Soto (0-1) lasted 2 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits in his time on the hill.

Cacao Valdez
Jose Aguilar got things going in Obregon's 4 run 3rd inning with a single to left. Cheslor Cuthbert followed with a single to right with Aguilar stopping at second. Aguilar stole third and scored on a double by Jesus Valdez. A single to right by Leo Heras scored Cuthbert. John Nogowski reached base on a dropped fly ball by the Venado's right fielder that plated Valdez. Heras scored on a ground ball force out as the Yaquis took a 4-1 lead. Obregon added 4 runs to produce the final 8-3 margin of victory.

Timely hitting was the key for the Yaquis who were 5 for 10 with runners in scoring position while the Venados only managed  to go 2 for 11 in the same situations.

Every starter for the Yaquis had at least 1 hit with Heras, Daniel Robertson and Aguilar all 2 for 5. Cheslor Cuthbert was 3 for 5 on the night.

Leones de Yucatan Weekly Update - April 3rd 2017

LEONES IN GOOD FORM TO BEGIN THE SEASON

Leones Started Off Strong
The Leones have started off the 2017 season of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol in fine fashion. Having swept the Tigres de Quintana Roo in Merida, the Leones find themselves alone atop the Division Zona Sur with a 3-0 record.

With an offensive display that produced 29 runs and 45 hits in the 3 games, it’s hard to imagine the hitters continuing at such an explosive rate. The pitching staff was equally as impressive during the series with the Tigres, giving up 6 runs and 22 hits in the 3 game set. Are the Leones this good or are the Tigres that bad? Only time will tell.

The boys from Merida have a .398 team batting average (2nd in the league), led the LMB in hits but fall behind the Pericos de Puebla in most other categories. It should be noted that the Pericos played the Bravos de Leon, a reincarnation of the Broncos de Reynosa, who finished 24-88 in 2016...last in the Zona Norte while the Tigres finished 68-45 in Zona Sur.
2nd in the LMB in Batting Average

Our pitchers rank 3rd in the LMB in ERA, 4th in hits allowed, 4th on walks allowed and tied for 3rd in the WHIP category. For those of you not aware of the term WHIP, it is a statistic for
Walks+Hits per Inning Pitched. The Leones pitching staff, which includes starters and relievers allow 1.11 hits and walks per inning. A number this low bodes well for the season, if sustainable.

Aguilar's Gold Glove
On Sunday, the final game of the 3 game set with the Tigres, the Leones showed off their individual fielding prowess from the 2016 season as they presented league Gold Glove Awards to Kevin Flores, Jose Aguilar and Ricardo Serrano

Based on what I have seen so far, I will stand by my prediction of the Leones finishing with a 75-36 record, champions of the Zona Sur and a good chance to bring the Serie del Rey trophy home to Merida.

Leones Sweep Series From Tigres With 13-1 Drubbing

JOSE AGUILAR HITS 1ST LEONES HOME RUN

Aguilar's Home Run Swing
The Leones hitters feasted once again on the pitching of the Tigres. The 3 game series saw Yucatan score 29 runs on 45 hits while holding the Tigres to 6 runs on 22 hits. With this balance of pitching and hitting, the Leones should advance nicely towards the Zona Sur division championship of the LMB.

10,400 loyal fans braved the 102 degree temperatures at game time and had plenty to cheer about. To put this number of fans in perspective, 3,800 fans watched the Diablos lose to Monclova, 3,700 saw the Pericos de Puebla defeat the Bravos de Leon and 2,700 die hard Piratas fans witnessed the heart breaking loss of the home team to the Olmecas de Tabasco.

The Leones led 4-0 before Ramon Ramirez hit a lead off home run for the Tigres in the top of the 3rd inning. That was the only bad pitch that Leones starter Juan Delgadillo (1-0) threw in his 5 innings on the mound as he held the Tigres to 3 hits. Three Yucatan relievers shutout the Tigres on 1 hit over the last 4 innings. Juan Arballo (0-1) gave up 7 runs on 10 hits over 3 innings to take the loss.
Delgadillo on the mound

In the bottom of the 4th inning, Jose Aguilar hit a lead off home run, the 1st HR of the year for the Leones.

Delgadillo pitched out of a jam in the 5th inning. He gave up singles to Iker Franco and Ramon Ramirez that put runners on the corners with no outs. Delgadillo then uncorked a wild pitch that put Ramirez on second but Jose Felix and then Mario Vega flew out to shallow center and Delgadillo struck out Greg Golson to end the threat and the inning.

Jordany Valdespin triple
Jordany Valdespin tripled and drove in 4 while going 2 for 5 and Leo Heras was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Leones offensive attack.

Can the Leones de Yucatan keep this up over the course of the season? Is the pitching staff of the Tigres this bad? We'll know more as the Leones travel to Tabasco to take on the 1-2 Olmecas and the Tigres return home to face the 2-1 Piratas de Campeche.

The Leones return to Parque Kukulcan on Friday, April 7th, to begin a 3 game series with Campeche.

Todos Somos Leones!

Championship Run Over...Leones Drop Game 7 By A 5-4 Score

TIGRES TO FACE ACEREROS DE MONCLOVA IN LMB FINALS

Watch video highlights HERE.

Leones Acknowledge Their Fans
The Tigres scored 4 runs in the top of the 6th inning, all with 2 outs, and hung on to beat the Leones in game 7 of the Zona Sur Championship series. Yucatan relievers Miguel Aguilar and Oscar Verdugo gave up 2 walks, a hit and allowed 2 runs to score without recording the final out of the inning. Verdugo took the loss for the Leones and Daniel Cabrera picked up the win for the Tigres.

The Leones started fast, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Jose Aguilar singled with one out and scored when Ricardo Serrano's line drive was misplayed by the Tigres left fielder and went to the wall. Serrano wound up on third. Jesus Valdez singled to left to score Serrano and Yucatan was up 2-0. Hector Gimenez walked. Luis Garcia singled to drive in Valdez but Gimenez was thrown out at third for the second out. Jaime Pedroza struck out to end the inning but the Leones were up 3-0 after 1 inning.
Serrano Scores

The Tigres answered with a run in the top of the 5th off of Yucatan starter Jonathan Castellanos. Greg Golson led off with a single to center and scored on a double to right by Esteban Quiroz.

With two outs in the top of the 6th for the Tigres, Jorge Cantu and Jorge Vazquez singled. That was all for Castellanos who was replaced by Aguilar. Sergio Contreras singled to drive in Cantu. Greg Golson then reached on an error by the Leones shortstop that scored Vazquez to tie the game at 3. Alfredo Amezaga walked to load the bases and Iker Franco walked on 5 pitches to force in Contreras with the go ahead run. Demetrio Gutierrez came in to pitch for the Leones and walked Esteban Quiroz to force in Golson and the Tigres had a 5-3 lead.

Israel Nunez and Corey Wimberly singled in the bottom of he 7th for Yucatan and Nunez scored on a sac fly by Jose Aguilar to narrow the Tigres lead to 5-4.

There would be no more scoring in the game and the Leones, after winning 3 consecutive games, dropped the all important game 7 to the Tigres by that final 5-4 score.

The Yucatan pitching staff, which led the league in ERA for the 2015 season, came up short in the final game of the year for the Leones and the hitters, who hit .291 on the year, came up 1 run short.

There is blame enough to go around, starting with the 2 losses at home to begin the series, but the Leones as a team never quit and brought exciting baseball back to Merida, something that had been missing for some time.

The Tigres will now face the Acereros de Monclova in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol Championship round set to begin in Cancun on Tuesday the 8th of September.

Anthony Capra pitched 5 innings and gave up the lone run on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Josh Lowey, normally a starter for Monclova, pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Lowey didn't allow a hit and struck out 3 in his time on the mound.
